Mars, The Bringer of War, begins forcefully with a rhythmic sequence in 5/4, forming an ostinato that gives the section its pulsing relentless pace. Unresolved harmonies and unrelated chords are superimposed, creating a clashing dissonance that aptly depicts conflict. Mars perhaps serves as a rocky and tormenting beginning. In fact, some have called this movement the more devasting piece of music ever written.
